Today you’ll get an example of a specific and strong brainstorm for a challenging Task 2 question about health and government.

When you brainstorm for your IELTS Task 2 essay, you only need to brainstorm enough for each paragraph. This saves time.

Also, for stronger body paragraphs in your essay, try to only include one reason with 2 specific details/examples in each paragraph.

Today, I share my brainstorm for this IELTS Task 2 question:

In some countries, people’s eating habits are causing increased rates of obesity and related health problems. The government must step in to help control the situation.

How far do you agree or disagree?

As with any Task 2 question that says ‘agree/disagree’, you should write an argument essay for this one. This is more balanced and organized. It is also easier to brainstorm and quicker to write.

Notice also that the opinion you’re being asked to agree/disagree with in the question is about the government controlling people’s eating choices, not the eating choices themselves.

You must read the question carefully to figure out what opinion you are supposed to directly write about in your essay.

Here is my brainstorm:

  • Paragraph 2
Governments should not step in. People free to choose own food, basic human right.
Over 90% first world countries teach a health curriculum. Nutrition, balanced diets. People have knowledge to choose.
Unhealthy victims of own choices, suffering obesity, cardiac problems, diabetes.
  • Paragraph 3
Ridiculous. Governments should step in. Not only sick suffer- all citizens foot the bill.
In U.S., insurance rates rising by whopping 15% every quarter, even for people who only visit doc once a month for check up.
The uninsured taking further toll on federal budget. Hospitalizations, surgeries, prescriptions, all paid for by others’ taxes.
