Today you’ll find out what the examiner wants to see in your conclusion for Writing Task 2.

Does your conclusion paragraph actually matter?

In regards to your score, the conclusion paragraph is not super impactful, but it has to be there.

Watch the video now!

How is the scoring system tied to the conclusion?

The IELTS Examiner grades you on four things.

  • Task Response/Task Achievement
  • Cohesion/Coherence
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar

Let’s take these one by one, and see if your conclusion matters.

Task Response Score

For your Task score, the Examiner must see that you’ve answered everything in the question.

This is done in the body.

She/he also must see your clear opinion throughout your essay.

Thus, DO NOT wait until your conclusion to state your opinion.

Cohesion/Coherence Score

For your Cohesion/Coherence score, you must present a complete essay.

It must be written according to proper academic essay expectations.

This means that, yes, you must have a conclusion.

Vocabulary and Grammar Scores

As to your Vocabulary and Grammar scores, the Examiner will most likely have decided those already by the time they see your conclusion.

Unless you really mess up this paragraph, you won’t change your scores here.

This is one reason you need to keep it short and sweet!

If you keep it simple, you are less likely to make unnecessary mistakes.

What should your conclusion look like?

Keep it simple.

Only have two sentences.

In the first sentence, restate your opinion.

Many students like to summarize their main points here, but that is not necessary.

The Task 2 essay is so short, the Examiner literally just saw your main points.

She/he won’t forget them by the time they get to the conclusion.

What should your final sentence be?

In the last sentence, you need to close your essay strongly.

You can do one of the following:

  • Use a quote
  • Make a prediction for the future
  • Give a short summary of the overall idea of your essay
