Today I’ll talk about kitchen equipment vocabulary for IELTS Speaking Exams.

You never know what you’ll be asked about on the IELTS Speaking Exam! (Besides work/studies/home questions.)

Kitchen equipment definitely falls into the odd and random category of questions that come up, along with ‘hats’ and ‘mirrors’.

You probably don’t discuss these topics often in your first language, let alone English.

Where could you use today’s vocabulary?

In Speaking Part 1, you may be asked to talk about your cooking habits, for instance.

In Part 2, perhaps you’ll have to describe an object that you use often in the kitchen.

In Part 3, the examiner may ask you what devices are found in the home in your country, and if those gadgets are advantageous or, instead, if they make people lazy.

Kitchen Equipment:

Coffee grinder– a device that grinds whole coffee beans into a coarse powder for a coffee pot or percolator

French press– a container made, usually, of glass or steel, that you put coffee grounds and hot water into, wait a couple minutes, then push down the plunger for fresh, strong coffee

Electric mixer– a handheld mixer has two mixing attachments; the other version is larger, with a bowl and one huge mixing hand that mixes automatically; used often in baking

Juicer– a device that makes juice out of whole fruit

Bluetooth utensil holder– container holding kitchen utensils, like knives or spatulas, that also connects via Bluetooth to your phone, so you can talk or listen to media (like the IELTS Energy podcast!) while cooking

Electric kettle– container that plugs into the wall and boils water when turned on; common in most countries, but not the U.S.

Above all, try to avoid only talking about the common equipment, such as oven, microwave, and fridge.

Every IELTS candidate confines their answers to those devices, and therefore they are boring and band score 6 ideas.

Now, you should look up today’s devices online to see an image.

Then, choose three that you use, or would like to use, and talk out loud about them.

What kitchen equipment do you use?
