Parallel expressions– Words/phrases that have similar meanings

Band descriptors– The chart examiners use to assign speaking and writing scores. There are detailed descriptions of each band, 1-9, for each category. There are public ones you can access: Speaking, Writing Task 1, and Writing Task 2.

Overall trend– A sentence in your Academic Task 1 essay which states a summary of the most important changes or characteristics of the graph(s)

Stress– Words you say which are longer and louder, because these are the ‘information words’

Intonation– Your voice going up and down

Tone– How formal or informal communication seems

CoherenceLogic; making sense; ease of understanding

Cohesion– Organization using linking words and transition phrases

Lexical range– Amount of vocabulary one has; variety of expression

Fluency– Able to communicate without difficulty
