Shubhkarman
Many of you are likely in a similar boat!
You have difficulty completing the exam on time and if you do, your scores aren’t as high as you need.
We’ll share what you might be doing wrong and a strategy that will help!
Possible problems
One mistake students make is reading entire passages on the IELTS Reading exam.
You don’t have time to read every word of these passages that are often very long.
IELTS Reading is not just a reading comprehension exam.
The second problem is that you may not have strategies to find answers quickly.
A combination of using strategies and reading passages selectively will dramatically increase your scores.
Strategy #1: Skimming
This is the first step for every new passage.
Take one minute to skim the passage.
Main ideas are usually found in the first and last lines of each paragraph.
Quickly skim these to get the overall gist of the passage.

Strategy #2: Scanning
Your second step is to scan for keywords.
You will first identify keywords in the questions.
These are important words that must be in the passage.
It will often be a synonym or a parallel expression.
Once you know the keywords, scan the text looking for them.
Strategy #3: Read in detail
Once you find the keywords, you will read the sentence they are in closely.
If needed, read the sentence before and after.
The answers are almost always close to the keywords.
There is a chance, however, that the keywords will exist multiple places in the passage.
If the answer isn’t there, keep scanning the text and look for another instance of that keyword.
Different question types
There are specific strategies for each question type.
You need to know which questions will be found in order and which won’t.
For finding headings to paragraphs, you need to know that main ideas are in the beginning and end of paragraphs.
For Yes/No/Not Given and True/False/Not Given, you need strategies.
You will need to practice identifying which answers are Not Given.
