Today you’ll learn when TO USE and when NOT TO USE your imagination on IELTS Speaking Part 2.

Today’s topic was inspired by a YouTube subscriber question.

Firstly, remember our honesty policy. You should only invent a story if you really have nothing else to say.

It can be very difficult to invent a coherent story with specific details on the spot, and this negatively impacts your score in a number of ways.

When you describe a real memory, you have more to talk about. There are real details that you can describe, and this increases confidence and fluency, as well as increasing vocabulary and pronunciation scores.

That rule applies to almost all topic cards asking you about the past or the present.

An exception here would be the topic card: Describe a person in the news whom you would like to meet.

In that case, you are talking about a person you do not know, and so must use your imagination.

Now, cards that ask you to describe future events or situations will require you to use your imagination.

Focus on the verb tense of the card. If the topic utilizes will, going to or would like, you will have to be inventive and creative.

Examples of imaginative Speaking Part 2 topics:

  • Describe a house you would like to have in the future. (Search this site for a sample answer about this as well!)
  • Describe a party you would like to give.
  • Describe a holiday you are going to take.
