Questions about technology are increasingly common on IELTS.

These can come up on both the Speaking and Writing exams.

Today we’ll walk you through a brainstorm for a Task 2 essay on the topic of technology in education.

We’ll then share a band 9 essay answering a question on this topic.

#1: How do you brainstorm for IELTS Task 2?

You should spend 5 minutes planning your Task 2 essay.

This includes clarifying your opinion and providing reasons for it.

It also consists of brainstorming details and examples to support these reasons.

  • Task 2 topic: To what extent do you think technology should be used to replace traditional classroom teaching?

First body paragraph: Advantages of technology in education

Possible ideas:

  • Personalized learning: Adaptive learning platforms adjust to student pace and level.
  • Access to resources: Online libraries, videos, interactive tools, simulations.
  • Engagement: Gamification, interactive quizzes, multimedia make learning more interesting.
  • Efficiency: Automated grading, instant feedback, and tracking progress.

For today’s essay, the idea we are choosing is flexibility and accessibility of online platforms. Students can learn from anywhere, anytime.

We then brainstorm an example or two for our idea and supporting details.

One example we will include is online courses like Coursera or Khan Academy.

Second body paragraph: Advantages of traditional classroom teaching

Possible ideas:

  • Reduced teacher guidance: Difficult for teachers to monitor understanding and provide personalized support.
  • Distractions: Students may multitask or get distracted online.
  • Limited hands-on experience: Lab work, arts, sports, and real-life practice are hard to replicate digitally.

For our essay, we are choosing the idea of social interaction. Teachers and peers provide opportunities to build social skills.

We will use an example of a study by the National Institute of Health, wherein 88% of respondents reported feeling less socially connected to peers during online classes.

You don’t have to know details like this on test day for every topic.

These statistics can be invented as long as they are logical.

You can also, instead, use personal examples.

Band 9 Task 2 essay on this topic

The rapid advancement of technology has transformed many aspects of modern life, including education. While some advocate for replacing traditional classroom teaching with technology, I believe that online learning should complement, rather than completely replace, face-to-face methods. In the following essay, I will explore both perspectives and proffer justification for my opinion.

Regarding the educational benefits of technology, it is undeniable that they are numerous. Online platforms and digital tools allow students to access materials from anywhere at any time, providing flexibility that traditional classrooms cannot match. As a shining example, Khan Academy and Coursera enable students to learn at their own pace, revisiting difficult concepts as needed.

Turning to the advantages of in-person learning, I believe teachers and classmates provide essential social interaction, enabling students to develop communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. Instructors can offer immediate guidance, clarify misunderstandings, and adapt lessons to the needs of the group. Additionally, peers provide opportunities to develop social skills. As an illustration, in a recent study by the National Institute of Health, 88% of respondents reported feeling less socially connected to peers during online classes

In sum, while technology has the potential to enhance education significantly, it should not replace classroom instruction. By integrating digital tools, schools can provide a more engaging, flexible, and effective experience while preserving the critical benefits of face-to-face instruction.
