What is the best way you have found to improve pronunciation in a language you’re learning?

Today we’ll share 3 tips for improving pronunciation scores for IELTS Speaking.

Whether you have 30 days or 3 months, these strategies will help you boost scores.

Tip #1: Read aloud every day

Reading aloud is one of the most underrated pronunciation exercises.

When you read silently, you’re focusing on understanding meaning.

When you read aloud, you’re training your mouth, tongue, and muscles to produce English sounds more naturally.

How to do this

  • Choose a short article, podcast transcript, or news story.
  • Read it aloud for 5–10 minutes daily.
  • Focus on clarity and word stress rather than speed.
  • Record yourself and listen back.

“Many cities are investing in public transportation.”

Notice the correct word stress: MANY cities are inVESTing in PUBlic transporTAtion.

It’s a common mistake to try to sound “perfect” immediately.

The goal is consistency.

Five minutes every day is more effective than one hour once a month.

Tip #2: Shadow native speakers

Shadowing means listening to a native speaker and repeating immediately after them.

This helps you copy natural rhythm, stress, and intonation.

How to do this

  1. Listen to 10 seconds of audio..
  2. Repeat exactly what you hear.
  3. Mimic the speaker’s pace, intonation, connected speech and word stress.

Example: “I think technology has improved our quality of life.”

Notice how “has” and “improved” are linked.

Notice how “quality of life” is a chunk that is said as one word.

Why it improves scores

Many students focus only on individual sounds.

However, IELTS pronunciation scores are heavily influenced by rhythm and stress patterns.

These activities will improve your word stress and rhythm.

Tip #3: Pause between thought groups

Native speakers organize ideas into chunks called thought groups.

One reason some IELTS candidates sound unnatural is that they don’t consider thought groups when pausing.

Instead of: “I think / public transportation / is important / because / it reduces traffic.”

Use natural chunks: “I think public transportation is important / because it reduces traffic.”
