Today’s question
YT – @IDCarrot
Thanks for your amazing tips. I listen to your podcast religiously and it already becomes a daily routine. I have a question, I know it’s allowed to lie a little bit. But what if I have absolutely no idea about what to say, is it okay that I just “steal” the plots in some series or movies which may be legit familiar with examiners?
You absolutely can steal plots from tv shows and movies!
We’ll show you how to do it today!
Your answers must make sense
Your answers need to be logical and make sense.
You couldn’t take the plot of Project Hail Mary and describe how you were an astronaut that saved the world.
What not to do
Here’s an example of what you should not do.
Question: Do you enjoy watching movies or TV shows?
Answer: For sure, especially when they remind me of intense experiences. For example, I once went through a situation where I had to survive in a really remote place after a trip went wrong. I had to figure out how to find food and build a basic shelter, which was honestly terrifying but also kind of eye-opening. So when I watch survival movies now, I feel like I can really relate to them on a personal level.
This could be borrowing from shows like Lost and Castaway.
The problem is that it is very unrealistic that this has happened to you.

When you use our Insider Method you avoid the BIGGEST MISTAKES that most students make on IELTS.
What to do
Stay generic enough that it feels like a real personal experience.
It should not clearly signal a specific TV show or movie.
If the examiner recognizes it as plot from a familiar show, this won’t pull down your score.
It just needs to be believable and realistic.
Question: What is your favorite thing about your job?
Answer: It’d have to be the people I work with. There’s always something funny happening in the office, whether it’s random jokes, awkward moments, or little competitions that break up the day. It makes even stressful days much more enjoyable because there’s this goofiness and camaraderie. I feel like the environment is relaxed but still productive, so it’s a really good balance.
This loosely reflects the kind of team conflict and pressure you see in workplace or group-dynamics shows, such as:
- The Office (for everyday team dynamics and conflict, though in a comedic way)
- Suits (for high-pressure teamwork and deadlines)
Band 9 sample answer
Question: What do you like to do with friends?
“We mostly like to just hang out somewhere comfortable, like a café or someone’s apartment. We usually sit around talking for hours, joking about random things, and sometimes even debating silly topics that turn into big conversations. When we were all single, we were living in New York and we got together almost every day at the same coffee shop, which kind of became our regular spot. It wasn’t anything fancy, but those moments were really meaningful because we could just relax, laugh, and be ourselves.”
Takeaway
You do not have to tell the truth on IELTS.
The Examiner doesn’t know and doesn’t care if you’re making up details.
What is important is that your facts are logical and make sense.
It is also vital that you directly answer the question.
