Talking About The Past

We all like to talk about great memories from our past.

There are certain phrases that all pertain to the past, and they can be fun to use in English conversations when you connect with natives.

All three phrases have the word “back” and can be used to reference the past.

These phrases we use, and you can use, to introduce that you are going to talk about a memory from your childhood or past.

Discussing these memories are a great way to connect with other people.

This is particularly true when you talk to people from other cultures because you can compare what memories you both have.

The Phrases To Use

These are the phrases that can help you to reflect upon the past.

They can help you to talk about something that happened, or that can help you to go back in time so to speak.

Try using them in conversation as a great way of connecting.

  • Way Back: You use this to talk about friendships that you have had for a long time, dating back to when you were kids there are things to say about it. You might say something like “We go way back, we’ve been friends since elementary school!” You might also say “way back in the day” but that tends to be used with older people because it’s a bit dated. You have a friendship that has gone on through many years and has stood the test of time. This phrase is typically used when you are a bit older and you have years of history together.
  • Throw Back: This can be used to describe things from the past. It may be used to describe something like music that occurred years ago. You might say “Oh this song is such a throwback to the nineties!” This can put a smile on your face because it sparks a bit of nostalgia. This has a positive connotation to it and it brings back some great memories.
  • Takes Me Back: There is something that brings about a great memory. It may be a song, it may be a smell, or something significant that really helps you to focus on and remember your youth or years in the past. This one thing can trigger your memories and it’s often a very positive experience. You might say something like “This song really takes me back to freshmen year of college–I love it!” The familiarity is comforting and can instantly put a smile on your face.

All of these phrases can be great fun to use, and they all reference the past.

These are usually really positive memories, and so these phrases can be a great way to focus on that.

Use This In Your Own Life

It can be great to use such phrases and trends in your own life.

It’s great to show what you have learned and apply it to real life.

So what can you do to reference this episode?

There is a trend now known as “Throwback Thursday” that you will see featured on Instagram.

This is a trend where people post pictures of themselves on Thursdays of when they were younger.

When you post these pictures, include the hashtag #TBT but also reference #AllEarsEnglish .

Try this out and post a throwback photo from your past and then use the hashtag, and see what we all come up with.

If you use both hashtags, it can be a really fun trend and create a great community activity.
