Are you worried about understanding the IELTS Listening test audio?
If so, you are not alone!
Today we have a fun solution for this problem.
The trick is to get into a TV series.
Today we’ll share why and our recommendations.
How television helps your IELTS scores
When you are really into what you’re listening to, you’ll forget that you’re practicing English.
By your exam date, you will be able to understand the audio and get answers correct.
You can find great series and other resources on Netflix.
Today we’ll share several recommendations.
#1: The Four Seasons
This is a comedy series that was created by and stars Tina Fey.
It also stars Steve Carrell and Will Forte, who are both well-known comedians.
This show is widely praised as a witty, poignant, and refreshingly honest take on midlife relationships.
Centers on a tight-knit group of long-time friends whose quarterly vacation tradition is upended when one couple divorces and brings a younger partner on their trips.
It is a great show for familiarizing yourself with American accents.
#2: Ghosts
Both Lindsay and Aubrey recommend the comedy series Ghosts.
In it, a couple opens a bed and breakfast only to discover that the house is haunted.
When one of them hits her head, she is suddenly able to see and hear the ghosts that haunt the residence.
It features many different accents, as the ghosts are from different places and time periods.
Aubrey mentions that it is fairly family-friendly, and she watches it with her children.

It features a woman who pretends to be younger to get a job.
It has many references that are specific to Gen-X and millenials.
#5: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
This is a mystery thriller series based on Holly Jackson’s novels.
It follows teenager Pippa “Pip” Fitz-Amobi in a sleepy English town.
She takes on the five-year-old cold case of a local girl’s disappearance and her boyfriend’s subsequent suicide.
All characters have British accents, which makes it a great show to practice understanding this accent.
Aubrey recommends both the show and the books.
#6: The Diplomat
This political thriller series stars Keri Russell as a career diplomat unexpectedly appointed as the U.S. ambassador to the UK.
Amid an international crisis, she must defuse global tensions while managing her turbulent marriage to a fellow diplomat
This series features both American and British accents.
#7: The Gentlemen
This series, created by Guy Ritchie, blends the genres of drama and comedy.
A film by the same name was released first, followed by the TV series on Netflix.
In it, an aristocrat named Eddie transitions from duke to drug baron when he inherits a weed empire.
He partners with a criminal dynasty that has its own agenda.
Most characters have British accents, making it a great opportunity to practice hearing these accents.
Should you use subtitles?
We recommend you turn on the subtitles for the first couple of episodes until you have gotten used to the accents.
After you a few episodes, turn off the subtitles to get used to listening without them.
You can also watch a show once with the subtitles, and then watch again without them.
You’ll be amazed how much you understand the second time.
