Question #2: What do you like about your job?

Jessica first shares a bad example answer for this question.

  • Monotone / flat intonation
  • Simplistic answer
  • General, positive answer
  • No details

If you are using words like “happy” and “enjoy,” put that emotion in your voice!

You should sound happy!

You should sound like you’re talking about something you enjoy!

She then provides a high-scoring answer.

  • Interesting, varied intonation
  • Many details
  • Great idioms!

Nose buried in books: studying all the time

Long story short: a great phrase to use to wrap up if you go off on a tangent

Question #3: What would you like to change about your job?

For Aubrey’s low-scoring answer, she just says, “Nothing.”

Students do this all the time!

It is fine in real life.

However, it doesn’t work on IELTS.

You have to come up with something!

You must provide details for every question.

If your answer really would be “nothing,” make something up!

Don’t get me wrong!

Don’t get me wrong: don’t misunderstand me

We use this phrase if we find ourselves saying something that might be misinterpreted.

You can clarify your meaning with this phrase.

If you’re asked how often you exercise:

I don’t exercise enough now that gyms are closed.

Don’t get me wrong- it’s good that gyms are closed!

It’s just unfortunate that it makes it harder to exercise!

Here’s another great example:

I don’t go to a lot of parties now.

Don’t get me wrong- I know we should be social distancing!

However, I do miss seeing my friends.
