IELTS Speaking Part 1
Part 1 answers should be very different from Part 3.
They are questions a friend would ask you.
- What do you do on the weekend?
- What do you like about your job?
- What is your favorite restaurant?
The Examiner is listening for you to show variety in your vocabulary.
This means using more informal words and phrases in Part 1 and Part 2.
Part 3 will require more formal vocabulary.
#1: It just so happens that…
Use this phrase to introduce something that might surprise the listener.
It is perfect for sharing a surprising coincidence.
Here are examples for the Part 1 question, “What was the last time you went to the cinema?”
Well, it just so happens that I went last night!
It just so happens that I went to the movies this past weekend!

This is great filler to begin any question.
Often you need a moment to think of your answer and you can’t just be silent.
Use filler phrases so you have something to say while you think!
You can also use this to express a change of opinion.
These examples are perfect when answering, “Do you prefer to buy books or borrow them?”
Well, now that I think about it, I can’t remember the last time I bought a book! I always borrow from friends or the library.
Both! I often borrow books but I love to go to bookstores and buy old books. Now that I think about it, I haven’t been in years though!
#3: Hear me out…
This phrase is great for introducing a surprising fact or opinion.
These examples would be perfect for the question, “Do you often go to the zoo?”
Yes! I love the zoo! I know a lot of people feel strongly that animals shouldn’t be kept in captivity, but hear me out! I think zoos…
Absolutely not! Many people love zoos, but hear me out… These animals are trapped in such tiny pens!
