When would this come up on IELTS?

Well, this could be a question you are asked in Speaking Part 3 or Writing Task 2, and it might be challenging to come up with solid support.

This question was posted by a subscriber to our YouTube channel, and I found it interesting to think about, so I thought I’d share my own reflections with you.

The support given for my opinion, however, is very region specific, according to my own life experience in the U.S.

After watching today’s video, try to come up with support for your own opinion, based on your own country, culture, and observations.

Then, post your ideas in the comments section below- I’m super interested to hear your perspectives!

Perhaps the first idea that might occur to some of you would be to talk about ‘fake news’, as this is such a trending phrase right now.

However, I don’t believe this would be appropriate to the topic, as fake news has a very current connotation, and is not used to describe historical information right now.

So, my opinion is no, I don’t believe everything I read about historical figures.

Published or broadcast information, even about historical people and events, can be highly subjective, relying on the writer’s or speaker’s personal political leanings.

For example, I heard a story a few years ago about textbooks in Texas.

Every year, a board gets together to decide what they will include in these books for public school students.

One year, they chose to omit the fact that our founding fathers, like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, owned slaves. They thought it would paint them in a negative light.

However, I feel that one’s opinion should be formed with all the information available, be it negative or positive.
