Make sure you understand the question!

Notice the clarifying questions Binderiya asks.

Do you mean free time or work time?

This is much better than hoping you understand and possibly answering the wrong question.

The Examiner will clarify so you know you’re answering the question.

It does not pull down your score to do this.

However, you need native, natural phrases to ask for clarification.

Part 1 feedback

Binderiya did a great job providing details!

This brought out some interesting vocabulary.

However, she used the word “good” multiple times.

Avoid low-scoring, common words like “good.”

Replace it with something high level.

  • Totally awesome
  • Super amazing

This gets you the variety of vocabulary you need!

Idiom: good for the soul

On the Speaking exam, if you want to talk about the benefits of something, use this idiom!

  • Good for the soul / does my soul good: beneficial

We use this to exaggerate about simple things like drinking coffee or hearing music.

It does not have a spiritual or religious connotation.

It just means you find it beneficial.

Part 3 sample answers

Are there many environmental problems in your country?

Binderiya talks about her home country of Mongolia.

She describes the problem of air pollution, which is especially dangerous in the winter.

Industries and cars create a lot of smog.

She talks about the effect of this on children, as they can’t breathe clean air.

Should you talk about your home country or where you live now?

If the Examiner doesn’t specify, you can choose.

If they just say “in your country,” you can talk about where you live now or where you were born.

However, if the question says “in your home country,” you should discuss where you were born.

There is some flexibility here, so don’t get tripped up!

Part 3 feedback

The words “small” and “huge” were repeated multiple times.

These are band 5 words because they are so common.

There are many high-level options, so replace these!

Instead of small, say:

  • Minuscule
  • Tiny

Instead of huge, say:

  • Gargantuan
  • Humongous
  • Gigantic
