New to Canada podcast

Kate has lived in 5 different countries.

She’s very familiar with how to do it right!

She’s sharing her wealth of experience to help others planning to immigrate.

Be sure to check out her podcast, New to Canada.

It has great tips, advice and shared stories.

Tip #1: Expect an emotional roller coaster

She wishes she had known how emotional immigrating would be.

It helps to know this is totally normal!

It helps to expect this as a normal part of the experience.

You may feel:

  • Homesick
  • Lonely
  • Guilt for leaving loved ones behind

You’re not wrong for feeling negative emotions.

Your feelings are never wrong.

They don’t always need to be fixed.

It does, however, help to expect it so you’re prepared.

Coping mechanisms

You can use strategies to help feel better.

Put on a movie or television show that has your native language or accent.

This will make you feel right at home!

Find your favorite food from back home.

This will give you that connection to your culture.

You don’t have to leave your culture behind!

Take it with you!

Tip #2: Embrace a creative mindset

Especially when it comes to your career, you need to get creative.

Your job may look different in a new country.

You’ll need to be flexible about what you’re willing to accept or change.

You may not enjoy your job, but then you’ll meet someone who changes your trajectory.

Be open to networking and meeting people.

Pivot if needed and change what you’re doing.

Don’t reject new possibilities.

You also need a confidence mindset shift.

International experience is valuable for companies.

Be confident in your skills and experience!

Necessary online presence

Start building and updating your online presence.

  • LinkedIn profile
  • Research volunteering opportunities
  • Network

This will help you get your foot in the door.

Foot in the door: Idiom for making the first step toward a goal

If your career requires self-promotion or influence, build your social media presence.

In today’s day and age, this is increasingly important.

Today’s day and age: Expression to mean in the current, modern age

Tip #3: Take the pressure off

You may be tempted to set a timeline for yourself.

I will have a job by this date.

I will have friends by this date.

No one wins in this situation.

Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s.

Be patient, as these things will take as long as they need to fall into place.

Positive self-talk

Make sure your inner monologue is the way you would speak to a friend.

You would never say to a friend, “Do you have a job yet? If not, you’re a failure!”

Instead, you would say, “I’m so proud of yourself for taking this risk! You’re amazing! You’ll get a job soon. Don’t worry about it!”

No one is checking on you.

No one cares!

Enjoy your life and enjoy the experience!

You will be happier and more fulfilled if you take off the pressure for things to happen quickly.

Takeaway

It is not easy to move to a new country.

However, it is, of course, extremely exciting and rewarding!

Kate’s tips can help you be successful.

Be intentional about these things before you move abroad.

It will make things go much more smoothly if you expect it to be emotional.

It will also help in all ways, especially with your career, to be flexible.

Finally, don’t be hard on yourself!

Remove that pressure and stress for things to happen quickly.

Allow yourself to enjoy the journey.
