Recently we got an email from a listener, who recently joined 3 Keys IELTS. Here are the highlights:

  • aiming for a 7
  • involved in many IELTS websites with different tips… so…
  • should I follow just your tips, or still pay attention to other sites?

You can’t mix and match different systems! There are many competing strategies and it would be impossible to use more than one system at the same time.

If you look at our student testimonials, you’ll see that the way they got their scores was to trust 3 Keys IELTS, and only 3 Keys IELTS.

That’s not to say there aren’t many wonderful IELTS resources and sites out there. There certainly are! We are just saying that it’s difficult to piece together everything you need to pass your exam by using a variety of different resources.

Apart from that, we have all the resources and strategies that you need, in one place.

Beware as well of tutors who do not understand IELTS. Another student wrote to us with this question:

One of my tutors said that I cannot write, “Take myself as an example,…” He told me that I should express my own idea but I cannot use these kinds of words in the essays. If I want to use myself or my friends as examples, what should I do?

First of all, read the IELTS Task 2 question! It says, “...include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

So, yes, you can use your own personal examples!

However, we recommend using only one personal example.

Then, you should vary your examples by making one bigger.

For instance, instead of saying, “My cousin studied romance languages and couldn’t find a job after graduating“, apply it to the world.

You can say:

In a recent Washington Post article about the effectiveness of obtaining a degree in the Humanities, it was noted that 50% of those who graduate university with a degree in Art, Philosophy, or similar subjects, could not find employment connected to their field of study.

As we’ve said before, it is perfectly acceptable to make up fake research and resources in IELTS Writing Task 2. You just need to make sure that it is appropriate and logical.
