Did you know that there are some abbreviations that sink IELTS Writing scores?
We had an interesting question in our course’s closed Facebook group:
While I’m practicing my Writing Task 1, a question comes to mind. If the number is 3,000 people, can I just write 3k people? But, would ‘k’ mean kilo in my essay?
The ‘k‘ would mean ‘thousand‘, as ‘kg‘ means ‘kilogram‘.
However, no! Don’t look for short cuts, especially ones like this that wouldn’t save any time.
Also, it would be inappropriate to put ‘k‘ instead of the zero’s in an Academic Essay.
Moreover, in general, we do not want to abbreviate in our formal writing.
When numbers get longer, however, you can use the number word instead of the 0’s, such as saying ‘3 million‘. Still, don’t abbreviate that to ‘M‘!
