Today you’ll hear high-scoring thoughts on thesis statements for Writing Task 2.

In order to get a good score for Cohesion Coherence, you must have a thesis statement!

This sentence is functional. It should be the last sentence of the introduction.

It orients the reader, telling the examiner what kind of essay you are writing.

The thesis statement is general, because all the details come in the body, and will be in every piece of academic writing you compose in your life.

A 3 Keys student asked a question about his idea for a Writing Task 2 thesis statement:

In the following paragraphs I will explore the complications as well as offer possible resolutions for this issue.

This is fantastic!

This student is taking what he’s learned in 3 Keys IELTS and adding his own ideas. Being flexible, and using strong templates, is what gets you an 8 in Writing!

It would be a great thesis statement for a problem solution essay.

The functionality of the thesis statement sentence is not just for Writing Task 2, however!

The overall trend, which must be present in Academic Task 1, serves as a thesis statement.

For General Training, you must have an opening which states the purpose of a formal letter, such as:

I am writing in regards to my atrocious experience at your establishment last Thursday.

In an informal letter you could say:

Hey, how’s it going? Remember that camping trip we had last weekend? I want to give you some pictures.

Thus, for every piece of writing on IELTS, you will have a sentence that states your purpose.

In Speaking Part 2 as well, you should state your purpose, your topic, directly in the beginning of your answer.
