How do we answer Task 2 Essay questions that contain two separate questions?

A student posted in the 3 Keys IELTS Success System Facebook group regarding a Task 2 question about different types of music in the world.

  • Why do we need music?
  • Is traditional music more important than the international music we often hear?

In Body Paragraph 1 she wanted to answer the first question about whether we need music.

In the second body paragraph she wanted to answer the second question about traditional music.

This is exactly correct!

When there are two questions, answer the first one in Body Paragraph 1 and the second one in Body Paragraph 2.

What type of essay would this be?

It would be impossible to write an opinion essay, because the question is a fact.

You can’t disagree with the fact that there are many types of music!

3 Keys IELTS Success System student Laeticia got an 8 in IELTS Writing and her advice was to focus on the question and not the essay type.

  • Learn the templates for argument, opinion, and problem/solution essays provided in the 3 Keys IELTS course.
  • Determine why the sentences are organized the way they are
  • Understand why and how to use transitions
  • Internalize them so you can easily and quickly use them on the IELTS Exam.

How is studying for the IELTS Exam similar to natives learning English?

We learn the rules and frameworks first.

Once we understand the rules, we can break them in interesting ways!

Another example is English vocabulary.

When we understand how words are used, we can be creative with them.

A good example of this is the word adulting, which is not really a word, but we use it all the time. We talked about this in Episode 1245.

Brainstorming a question about music

Many students freeze up if they are less familiar about a topic related to the arts.

Brainstorming about different topics in advance will help you feel more confident and prepared.

Jessica and Lindsay brainstorm about this exam question.

Why do we need music?

  • It gives us a mental break, and a way to escape our thought patterns.
  • Music can communicate meaning and feelings that are inexpressible through words alone.
  • It brings up memories and a sense of nostalgia that keeps us rooted in who we are.

How can we include specific personal examples?

  • Share details about an album you liked as a teenager
  • Do you still listen to that album now?
  • How do you feel when you hear it?
  • What memories come back to you?

For Body Paragraph 2 regarding traditional music and international music, should you share your opinion?

The easiest, most simple way to organize this type of essay is to choose a side.

It is more time-consuming to defend both sides, and can easily overcomplicate your essay, as you would need to provide strong support of both sides.
