Today is the first in a new series for 2020!
We are featuring live study plans created for students just like you!
Area is the first 3 Keys IELTS student we are interviewing for this series.
She describes her experience taking the exam without a study plan.
In contrast, she provides details about studying with the 3 Keys IELTS Success System.
Her experience is likely very similar to many of yours!
Listen in and take notes for ideas on how to improve your IELTS preparation.
Who is Area?
Area is a nurse from Nigera who is studying for the IELTS exam!
She is working toward immigrating to Canada.
In Canada, she feels she can receive a higher salary and better quality of life.
To immigrate to Canada, she needs that magic 8, 7, 7, 7.
What was Area’s first experience taking the IELTS exam?
She took it in August 2019 and it was the first time she took an English exam of any kind.
Her scores were:
- Overall: 6
- Listening: 6
- Reading: 6
- Writing: 4.5
- Speaking: 6.5
She had not done much formal preparation.
For about a month, she watched YouTube videos and read information online about what the exam is like.
When writing the essay, she did not format it in paragraphs and she did not use transitions.
Additionally, she did not know she needed to write an opening and a closing for the Task 1 letter.
This is very common for students who don’t know how to prepare for the Writing exam!
Once she joined 3 Keys IELTS, she realized what mistakes she had made and why she got these scores.

What tips can improve your Writing score for the General training letter?
You need to aim closer to 180-200 words.
This is because the Task score you receive depends on supporting details for every single bullet point.
You need at least 2 specific details for each bullet point.
You also need an opening and a closing.
It’s impossible to do that in just 150 words.
Because of this, the General training Task 1 is often more difficult than the Academic Task 1.

What questions did Area have about Writing?
She needed clarification on formal and informal vocabulary and when to use them.
In the first Writing module of the 3 Keys IELTS Success System, this is answered very clearly with examples and practice exercises!
We provide vocabulary that is appropriate for each Writing Task.
She also wanted to know how to prepare for writing the Task 1 letter.
Personalize your study plan!
For Area, she needs to focus on Writing because she is very worried about that part of the exam.
One thing Jessica advised was for her to start keeping a daily journal.
She can follow Ryoki’s example and write every day about her future life after IELTS.
She also needs to do IELTS Writing practice 3 times per week.
Rather than choosing easy topics she is familiar with, she must write about a wide variety of topics.
This is the only way to be prepared on exam day!
What other resources can Area use?
Because she’s a 3 Keys IELTS student, she is a member of our exclusive Facebook group!
She can post questions there and get answers within 24 hours from IELTS experts!
This also gives her access to an active community of students preparing for the IELTS exam.
She can learn from them and find speaking partners as well!
