Today you’ll meet Mariana, a 3 Keys student and chemist from Brazil.

She won this month’s Writing Wizard contest.

This contest motivates students to practice Task 2 essays.

The 3 Keys student who writes the best essay gets a free class with Jessica and an appearance on the podcast.

You’ll find out what scientific skills make her writing better.

She’ll also share tips that made her writing so great!

What English writing does Mariana currently do?

She has a lot of experience writing scientific reports.

When it comes to IELTS writing, she doesn’t have a lot of experience.

However, she reads and writes a lot of reports with numbers.

Often, she has to compare results and numbers.

This has helped prepare her for Academic Task 1.

What skills did she still need to master?

She needed strategies to write organized essays.

She needed to organize her ideas and use specific examples.

She also needed to be able to use linking words between every sentence.

Feeling overwhelmed and lost, she knew she needed a study system!

This taught her brainstorming techniques.

It also helped her organize her ideas and examples in a logical way.

Writing Wizard contest

This month’s Writing Wizard contest topic was:

An increasing number of 18-year-olds are moving out of their parents’ homes after high school so they can leave on their own.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

She was not nervous about this topic.

After learning 3 Keys strategies, she felt confident and prepared.

Strengths in Mariana’s Task 2 essay

The introduction was clear, simple and straightforward.

She introduced the topic immediately and clearly.

However, she used very high level vocabulary.

She was able to do this because she has been creating a Vocabulary notebook.

Tip #1: Create and use a Vocabulary notebook

For an article or book chapter, choose just 2 words.

Don’t overwhelm yourself!

Review these words often and use them in your study.

Then use this new vocabulary often!

Practice answering IELTS questions using the Vocabulary.
