What is Speaking Part 2?
Speaking Part 2 asks you to describe something.
It can be anything!
If you are asked to describe someone’s opinion, you must be clear in your answer.
“It is his opinion that education is vital…”
“He believes that a person should prioritize choosing a career they are passionate about…”

You must fill 2 minutes!
Though the instructions say you should speak for one to two minutes, you must fill the entire two minutes.
If you stop speaking before the two minutes are up, your fluency score will be affected.
When describing someone’s opinion, it would be difficult to fill two minutes!
Strategy: tell a story
As long as you answer the question, you can then talk about anything related.
Share the story about when the person told you their opinion or how you learned it.
You can share what happened before you learned their opinion and after.
Additionally, you could share any details about the person.
You can always go off on tangents as long as you directly answer the question.
In this case, you need to directly provide their opinion.
Speaking Part 2 sample answer
Lindsay provides a band 9 sample answer to the following Speaking Part 2 question:
- Describe an opinion someone shared with you.
Notice the interesting intonation and high-scoring vocabulary Lindsay uses.
Practice providing details like this for the entire two minutes.
Time yourself to get an idea of how long this is.
