Today we talk about an IELTS Speaking topic that comes up in Part 1 and Part 3 and sometimes it can come up in IELTS Writing Task 2 as well. The topic is pets.
The topic of pets comes up on IELTS, and, in some cultures, it is not a usual part of society or home life.
Not only might you have to talk about it, but the general topic of animals might come up anywhere on the IELTS Listening test or Reading test.
Plus, learning about our Western culture of pets might come in useful when you try to immerse yourself in the English-speaking country you move to.
Example questions
Do people have pets inside their houses in your country?
Lindsay said:
- “Absolutely they do. When I was growing up, we had two cats, Pokey and Sparky. Adorable names, I know. And, I grew up with those cats, I *loved those pets to death.”
*This idiom is great for expressing your opinion anywhere on the IELTS test.

- “Yeah, of course people have pets. Especially if I could talk more locally, just about my city, about Portland, I feel like every other resident has a dog. I don’t see many cats, but everybody has a dog. Everybody is walking their dogs at night, and people are training them, and everybody is a pet owner here.”

Can you think of any situations in which animals are treated unfairly in your country today?
Lindsay said:
- “If I had to answer that question, I would say dog shows. I would imagine that dog shows are the type of situation in which the dog is primed, and raised, literally, to be the the prize winner for the family. Possibly even the family’s incomes are reliant on this animal. Maybe even the dog is abused or forcefully handled to perform in these ridiculous shows, having to be subjected to things like their fur done in a certain way or having to wear weird bows, just not being allowed to be an animal.”
