This is a very common problem.
Many students struggle the most getting 7+ on IELTS Writing.
Today we’ll share 3 tips to move from a 6 or 6.5 to 7 on Task 2.
#1: Task response score
Each idea must be fully supported with details and examples.
Many students have multiple ideas in a body paragraph, none of which are supported well.
Instead, brainstorm one idea, with supporting details and an example.
Think of it as proving to the examiner that your idea makes sense.
Example:
The increasing reliance on technology in education is creating more problems than it solves. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
A common mistake is that IELTS students will think of many ideas and list them all.
- Distracting for students – using phones and smart watches during class
- Causing students to be lazy – too reliant on spelling and grammar checkers
- Keeping students from learning to write well
- Increased screen time
- Cybersecurity threats / online bullying
Instead, choose one of these for each body paragraph for an opinion essay.
If writing an argument essay, choose one of these to support one side and one idea to support the opposing view.

#2: Vocabulary score
You need less common, high-scoring, topic-specific vocabulary.
Read articles and listen to podcasts about common IELTS topics.

Add 3-4 words per article or podcast to your vocabulary notebook.

Start paragraphs with introductory phrases.
