In the last video, we talked about what the band scores mean for your IELTS Speaking test, and today we’ll look at the scores for IELTS Writing.

Band 6- Competent

Basically, if you’re a writing band 6, you’ve prepared for the test but still make a lot of mistakes.

You include some important numbers in Academic Task 1, and an overview, but you’re not explaining the importance of the numbers.

In General Task 1, you are addressing all the bullet points, but you don’t have enough details.

For vocabulary, you don’t repeat a lot, but you also don’t have noticeably interesting phrases. Also, there’re probably some spelling and collocation errors.

Same with grammar– you have a variety of structures, but still quite a few mistakes.

Band 7- Good

For band 7, you have answered the questions well and have some specific, strong support.

Also, you are using some high-level, interesting vocabulary, but still have a couple collocation errors.

For grammar, there are a few compound/complex sentences that are perfect, but still mistakes in other sentences.

Also, you have a strong, clear opinion in Task 2.

Band 8- Very good

For this score, you answered the questions completely, specifically and appropriately.

You have tons of impressive and interesting vocabulary, but still a couple mistakes.

Same with grammar– you have a lot of perfect sentences, but still a couple mistakes.

Band 9- Expert

Basically the same as an 8, but with no mistakes.
