Did you know that you must be specific in IELTS Writing Task 2?

Giving very specific details and examples in your body paragraphs raises your Task Response, Cohesion Coherence, and Vocabulary scores.

Why do you have to be specific?

Supporting your ideas with very specific information makes your ideas clearer and stronger. The reader can understand exactly what you mean. This increases your Task Response score.

Not only that, but if you are super direct in your communication, the clarity of your ideas helps your CC score.

And, of course, delving deeply into one idea brings out vocabulary that you do not show if simply keep your notions in the realm of generality.

How can I make my ideas more specific?

It’s all about brainstorming.

  • Underline key ideas in the IELTS Task 2 question.
  • Split your brainstorm into two sides, or two opinions.
  • At the top of each column, write the opinion.
  • Look at the first opinion. Ask yourself, “Why do people believe this?”
  • Then, write down one reason.
  • Also, at the bottom of the page, write who, what, when, where, why, how.
  • Try to add details and examples about real people, real places, and real times to prove your reason.

Example of a specific brainstorm.

Some people believe that universities should only teach practical skills that are connected to future employment.

  • With high unemployment rates around the world, people need to increase their chances of landing a job.
    • In a recent study, it was found that over half of all humanities majors do not find jobs related to their degrees.
    • We need real life professional skills, such as in the health and engineering fields, not more artists.
    • Since the economic crash of 2008, jobs are increasingly hard to come by. Creating more vocational education and training in trades will help people find real jobs sooner.
    • Even in first world countries, unemployment rates are staggering. College graduates need hands-on, practical training to work in such fields as construction and IT.

In your own brainstorm, you only need to think of 3 specific details.

Only write down enough for a paragraph. Any more than that is a waste of time.

Practice this brainstorming technique with example questions, and watch your ideas gain clarity!
