IELTS Part 3 is the most difficult section of the Speaking exam.

The topics are more serious about issues affecting society as a whole.

In order to score highly, there are several things to consider.

Today you’ll learn about each of these and hear band 9 sample answers.

These are all related to decisions, a common IELTS Speaking topic.

#1: Time

Each Part 3 answer should be about a minute long.

You won’t want to think about this while answering on test day.

Therefore, you must practice in advance so that you can feel how long they should be.

Set a timer and aim to speak for a minute when answering Part 3 questions.

If the Examiner interrupts your answer, do not let it throw you off.

It will not lower your score, but will actually show your fluency.

They may need to do this in order to ask all the required questions.

#2: Vocabulary

The most formal vocabulary on the IELTS Speaking exam will be in Part 3.

Part 1 questions are more informal about your life, hobbies and interests.

Because Part 3 is about society, you’ll speak more formally.

You need topic-specific vocabulary that is less common and, therefore, higher-scoring.

#3: Linking

The Fluency and Coherence score requires you to link ideas.

You cannot merely use simple sentences.

This would sound choppy and disjointed.

Instead, use linking phrases to join ideas and organize thoughts.

This can be tricky, as it doesn’t always feel natural to use linking phrases.

To boost scores, rather than just saying also, then, next you should opt for less common options.

#4: Support

In order to speak for a minute, you will need to provide support for ideas.

Each answer will require details and examples.

Many believe you cannot use personal examples on Part 3, but this isn’t true.

You can use both personal examples as well as those not connected to you.

Adding details will allow you to use a multitude of vocabulary.
