This is useful in all parts of the Speaking Exam, and you’ll hear examples of pivoting in today’s group of IELTS questions about reading in Speaking Part 3.

Notes from Jessica’s answer:

  • benefits that overlap between the two
  • it’s going to bleed into other areas of our lives (great idiom!)
  • as opposed to other areas
  • the imaginative aspect
  • making ends meet… facts and figures
  • alongside crazy characters in a cafe of poets

Speaking Part 3 Question: How could more adults be encouraged to read novels?

Notes from Lindsay’s answer:

  • they’re scattered…all over the place
  • stories above all
  • this genre of true crime
  • grab onto that
  • really gripped adults
  • actively take part in
  • engage people in stories

In that answer, Lindsay mentions the Serial podcast. The first season was truly groundbreaking.

Jessica then mentions a famous true crime novel, about the Manson family, called Helter Skelter.

Note in that last answer how Lindsay pivots to podcasts from novels.

As long as you make it clear that you are headed in a different direction in your answer, you’re good!
