Today you’ll learn a strategy to activate higher IELTS Listening scores.

In IELTS questions such as note, form, table, map and diagram completion, there is a lot of information around each question.

Take a table, for instance. There are rows and columns, and only some of those boxes have words missing for you to fill in.

The same is true for note and form completion. Much of the notes are already filled in, and you only have to complete a few pieces.

A huge mistake that many candidates make is not looking at the other words, and only concentrating on the bits that contain questions.

Looking at everything is beneficial for two reasons:

Following along and underlining or circling words as you listen is imperative for keeping track, so you know when each answer is coming up.

This is part of being an active test-taker.

Also, looking at the notes/words around each answer gives you clues as to what you need.

For instance, if all the boxes in one column consist of adjective + noun phrases, then that is what you will need to complete that column.

Remember, as with any strategy, you must apply it to test practice in order to get comfortable using it.

You want to practice the tips and tricks so much that they feel natural on test day!
