#1: Overall comprehension

First, read the news article for overall comprehension.

Read for the gist, or the main idea.

Don’t stop to look up vocabulary.

Don’t worry about words you don’t know, and look for overall meaning.

#2: Summarize

Write a short summary of the article in your own words.

Don’t look back at the article!

This will help you determine how much you understood.

A few sentences will suffice.

You are writing the main ideas.

#3: New vocabulary

Go back to the article and choose 4 new vocabulary words or phrases.

Write them in your vocabulary notebook.

Include English definitions and your own example sentences.

The more these are personalized, the better you’ll be able to remember and use the new words.

Focus on words that you will be able to use on the IELTS exam.

Rewrite your summary.

Paraphrase sentences using parallel expressions.
