Today you’ll learn about nonverbal habits of high scoring speaking candidates for IELTS.

Yes, most of your score is based on the words you use.

However, there are other ways we communicate that go beyond that.

Nonverbal communication may not be specifically in the scoring rubric that the examiner uses, but the elements mentioned today do raise your scores in strategic ways.

3 Nonverbal Habits for Speaking Success

Eye-contact

Direct eye-contact is what confident people do. Looking into the eyes of the person you are speaking to shows strength, control and confidence.

This helps you feel these characteristics inside yourself as well, aiding your Fluency and Pronunciation score.

That being said, don’t stare only into the eyes of the examiner- that would be awkward! You may glance around the room, and, in Speaking Part 2, at your notes.

Hand gestures

Using one’s hands while speaking is naturalnative speakers do this all the time, and you probably do this in your first language.

We use our hands to emphasize words– this helps vary your pronunciation as well, leading to higher Pronunciation scores.

However, don’t use your hands to replace vocabulary. If you can’t think of a word, give an example or explanation– you need to be able to paraphrase for good Vocabulary scores.

Facial expressions

Smiling, laughing, raising our eyebrows– all of these actions help our natural personality to come through, helping Fluency and Pronunciation scores.

Be yourself, be confident, control your performance, and see your Speaking scores rise!
