"The English Adventurer"

Recently, a student sent me a message about where he should put his opinion in his IELTS Writing Task 2 essay.

He had been perusing various IELTS sites, and had seen conflicting advice.

Let’s clear this up!

First of all, why do you have to put your opinion in the essay?

The examiner must see your strong, clear, personal view in order to award you a high score for Task Response.

This is why you should state your opinion using phrases such as I believe, I feel, From my perspective, etc.

And, yes, you must say “I”.

This is unlike other academic writing in which you shouldn’t use the first person pronoun. Remember- IELTS is different! Again, to get that high score, the examiner must clearly see your personal opinion.

Where should your opinion be in the essay?

Most likely, you will end up writing an argument essay.

This is the template you should follow for any question containing an opinion or opinions, or that says “agree/disagree, benefits/drawbacks, advantages/disadvantages.”

In this template, your opinion will be stated in the introduction, paragraph 3 and the conclusion.

In the introduction, you need to introduce two sides. You can do this by first stating one side, then following it with your side.

For example:

Some are of the opinion that the traditional classroom model will always be utilized; however, I feel that online learning will overtake this outdated mode of education in the near future.

In paragraph 2, you will explain reasons and examples for the other side, then in paragraph 3 you state reasons and examples for your side, and your opinion.

Finally, in the conclusion, you provide your opinion about the future of the topic.

For example:

My sincere hope is that the Department of Education realizes the benefits of the digital classroom, and employs legislation to encourage its evolution.
