Do you know of anybody that is pregnant?

Do you want to say the right thing to them but feel unsure of what to say?

Are you looking for the right phrases to share your excitement to say in English?

We’re going to look at what some appropriate phrases are to make somebody feel good about their pregnancy.

Today we have a listener question about congratulating people.

Hi My name is Lily, and I am from Korea.

I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your podcast!

I listen to it almost everyday and learn a lot from it. I want to give you guys a huge shout for your great work on the podcast.

Let me get straight to my question! The other day, my friend who had gone through multiple miscarriages told me that she was pregnant with her rainbow baby (which was amazing!!) So I said, “I am so happy for you” to congratulate her pregnancy. I couldn’t think of any expression other than that. So my question is–Can you give me better expressions or phrases to congratulate people on their milestones like wedding, baby shower and graduation other than “I am happy for you”?

Thanks in advance

A Bonus Definition

Thank you for the question! What a good one.

First let’s start with what is a rainbow baby?

It’s the baby someone has after suffering a loss of another baby.

So in the example above, the friend’s baby is a rainbow baby because she had lost a previous baby through miscarriage, so this is her rainbow.

It’s like the rainbow after a storm.

Looking At Some Options

Using the phrase above can be just fine.

Saying “I’m so happy for you!” can help to show your excitement and joy for that person.

What else could you use?

  • What fantastic/amazing/great news! (What ______ news!)
  • Congratulations! This makes my day!
  • I wish you all the happiness in the world

What other questions or phrases could you say to a woman when you find out she is pregnant?

  • When are you due?
  • Do you know what you’re having?
  • How have you been feeling?

These are all appropriate and can help you to share your excitement at their good news.

Takeaway

Feel free to ask questions but if someone doesn’t want to answer, don’t be offended.

People generally are happy to talk about pregnancies, but some people may be more private.

There are many ways to congratulate somebody on their pregnancy, so practice using a few.

Consider the relationship you have and the situation as you decide upon what to say.
