It is vital that you improve your overall English while studying for the exam.

We do, of course, recommend our IELTS Energy TV YouTube channel!

However, it’s not enough enough to just watch IELTS videos.

Half your time should be sent specifically on IELTS strategies and skills.

The other half should be spent improving your overall English!

Why should you watch YouTube channels?

There are many interesting YouTube channels made for native English speakers.

Use these to balance your study!

There is a huge variety, so you’re guaranteed to be able to find something that interests you!

This content will engage your brain and keep you interested.

It’s a great way to stay motivated!

These videos will help you add topic-specific vocabulary to your notebook.

They’ll also give you ideas for both Speaking and Writing.

What types of channels should you watch?

Be strategic!

Don’t watch videos of someone playing Minecraft!

These won’t have vocabulary or ideas that will help you on IELTS.

Instead, seek out videos that deal with common IELTS topics.

  • Travel
  • Food
  • Hobbies
  • Education
  • Art
  • Science
  • Technology

Today we’ll recommend channels that are full of vocabulary and ideas on a couple of these topics.

#1: Travel

Fearless and Far is a great travel YouTube channel!

It has interesting content.

It is run by Mike Corey.

He gets to know members of local tribes and learns about their customs.

He’s also a daredevil!

You’ll see him hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro or exploring deep caves.

He goes to some very dangerous places.

You can access his channel here.

#2: Food

Another great channel is Food Insider.

Interesting video lessons can be found sharing the history of different foods.

Do you want to know how the traditional cornish pasty is made?

You can find out on this channel, along with cultural information.

Additionally, there are interesting videos comparing the foods for holidays in different cultures.

This channel can give you great vocabulary about not only food, but also culture and traditions.

You can find the channel here.

How to learn vocabulary from these channels

First, add 4-5 vocabulary words to your notebook.

Do not add long lists from each video, or you won’t learn any of it well.

Instead, choose words that are likely to help you on the exam.

Add them in context with example sentences.

Then, use this new vocabulary!

When writing sample essays and answering IELTS Speaking questions, make use of this vocabulary!

YouTube for Listening and Reading scores

These channels can also help boost scores on your Listening and Reading exams.

You will learn about topics and glean vocabulary that you will see on these exams.

And, of course, any time you are listening to spoken English, you are improving your Listening score!

As an enhancement activity, read the description for the video before watching.

Practice the skills you’ll need on the exam.

  • Look for key words.
  • Make predictions.

Come up with some questions that might be answered in the video.

Then listen for answers to these questions.

Takeaway

YouTube videos can help increase your scores for each section of the IELTS exam!

Find one you enjoy and use it to improve vocabulary and comprehension.

You must improve your overall English while studying for IELTS.

Try to achieve a balance between time spent studying IELTS strategies and general fluency.

This will help you not burn out.
