Students often ask us how to think of examples.

These are vital for IELTS Speaking and Writing.

You need ideas for every topic.

You have to be able to think of them on the fly!

You have options!

Today we’ll model how to do this for both Speaking and Writing.

Be specific!

Students struggle with being specific in body paragraphs.

They also have difficulty thinking of examples on the Speaking exam.

Think about the options.

What kinds of examples can you give?

  • Our own lives
  • Our city
  • Something we’ve read
  • Something we’ve watched

#1: Speaking Part 1

Part 1 Question: Do you lead an active life?

Aubrey would talk about playing volleyball on Saturday mornings.

She would give details about the new park a couple of miles away.

She would mention that COVID-19 is making this more difficult to avoid crowds.

#2: Speaking Part 2

Part 2 Question: Describe a time you were injured.

Jessica would tell a story about breaking her leg in high school.

Soccer was her entire life until this happened.

Due to this, it was a pivotal moment.

She mentions scoring a hat trick in a game.

  • hat trick: scoring 3 goals in one game.

#3: Speaking Part 3

What are some of the major changes that occur to people throughout their lives?

Aubrey says she would get person really quickly.

She would describe moving out of her parent’s home to go to college.

She would then talk about getting married and having children.

For many questions like this, your instinct will be to get personal questions.

Not all Part 3 questions can be answered with personal examples.

You need to be reading so you have ideas about every topic.

#4: Writing Task 2– Environment

  • Real people
  • Real experiences
  • Real facts

Forests produce fresh oxygen and participate in regulating climate. But every year tree cover of our planet is lessening due to deforestation.

What are the primary causes of deforestation?

To what results may it lead?

Jessica’s first thought is humans building houses.

The wood is being harvested to build these structures.

As a specific example, she would describe Oregon losing thousands of acres of forest.

Regarding results it may lead, she would describe displaced animals.

This leads to drastic issues such as new infectious diseases.

#5: Writing Task 2- Art

The government’s investment in arts, music and theatre is a waste of money. Governments should invest these funds in public services instead.

To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Aubrey first tried to brainstorm that government should not invest in the arts.

She had difficulty coming up with strong supporting details, so she quickly switched.

She would write about how private companies don’t invest in art, music and theater for the public, so the government has to.

A personal example she could share is attending Shakespeare in the Park plays in New York with her family.

You need to practice thinking of examples on every topic.

After listening to a podcast or watching a film, think about your opinion on the related topics.

What reasons for your opinion could you support in an essay?

The skill of coming up with examples quickly must be practiced!
