Today you’ll find out if grammar matters on IELTS, and get excellent pronunciation advice.

In the beginning of the episode, we mention two helpful articles for you guys- using your commute for IELTS, and combining working out with test prep.

A student asked us some interesting questions recently. The first one was:

“Can you tell me a good program or app to record myself so I can improve my pronunciation and practice speaking?”

You don’t need a special app for this.

Every phone comes with a voice memo function to record yourself.

Find it on your phone. Then, find a clip on YouTube of an expressive native speaker that you want to emulate.

Watch it for 5-10 seconds. Then, record yourself trying to copy the native. Listen to them back to back to compare.

This doesn’t necessitate a native speaker to tutor you. Trust your ears, and do your best to sound like the person in the clip.

Recently, a guest on the All Ears English podcast gave some good pronunciation advice, recommending the site youglish.com.

Another guest on the IELTS Energy podcast, Eliza, offered excellent tips for improving how you sound in English.

The second question was:

“I searched a lot on the internet. Most of the courses for IELTS focus on the 4 skills, but I don’t see grammar in them. I wonder why? Do we already need to have all the grammar studied? I’ve studied grammar for a long time, but I need to refresh it. I heard a podcast where you said grammar wasn’t important, so perhaps that’s the reason.”

It’s not exactly that grammar isn’t important. It’s just that you can’t improve that score a lot by only studying for a month or two.

Approach it strategically. For good grammar scores, you need many perfect sentences and a variety of sentence structures.

You don’t need a huge variety, though. It’s smarter on your part to learn specific structures, such as those in 3 Keys IELTS, then just use those correctly on your exam.
