Today you’ll learn how to use odd duck vocab. for personal descriptions in IELTS Speaking and Writing.

You can use today’s vocabulary to describe a variety of people in Speaking Part 2, like a friend, an inventor, a genius, a famous person or a successful person.

However, this “think outside the box” person or type of person could be described anywhere on the IELTS Speaking Exam, or even in Writing Task 2.

You can use the phrase “odd duck” to talk about an interesting person who’s a little big strange, and it’s not negative.

Of course, if you like outsiders, or quirky people, you would say this with affection.

Also, a bit more widely-used among native speakers, is “odd ball“. It’s used in the same way as “odd duck“.

Using the word “quirky” is also great. It’s a bit different than the other phrases.

It’s often used to describe style, like wearing mismatched socks, or wearing a hat from the 1930’s.

Also, though, it’s commonly used to describe weird behavior that is a characteristic of yours that doesn’t really make sense.

For instance, if you care about a really clean room, but not the kitchen at all, that’s a quirk.

Language habits as well could be quirks, if you tend to say a certain phrase very often, for example.

Another idiom you could use is to say, “She/he lives in their own world.”

These people don’t care about what other people think, going forward in a confident way. That’s positive.

Or, on the negative side, it could describe someone who is disconnected and doesn’t listen to reason.

A final idiom for quirky people is, “He has his head in the clouds.

This person is outside the norm, thinks differently about the world, and aspires to creative goals. You could also say dreamy.

That person usually doesn’t focus on day-to-day tasks like everyone else.
