When it comes to the Speaking test you may need to express your likes or dislikes. This is a core skill that could appear in a few places on the test so you must have high-level vocabulary to answer it.
Today we’ll give you some impressive vocabulary to aim for your 7 or higher.
You should always try to bring your own experiences into Speaking Part 1 and it can help your score if you can tell a tiny story using extreme vocabulary words that other students won’t use.
Here is today’s listener question:
“Hi Jessica- Would you please make a You Tube video on interesting high level phrases for I like or I don’t like. I need at least two or three parallel phrases that I could use in Speaking Part 1. The question that I would like to practice is: Why did you like or not like your elementary school.”

Vocabulary to Talk About Dislikes:
- Detest: This word is extreme. It means that you really really hate something. It’s good to use extreme words on IELTS. It’s descriptive and powerful and will get you a higher score. Example: “I detested the days that I had to wait outside for the bus.”
- Abhor: This is also very strong and means that you hate something. Example: “I abhorred the pudding at school lunch because it seemed like it should be sweet and yummy but it was gross.”
- It makes my skin crawl: You can use body language with this word to be more natural and descriptive. This would also help your pronunciation score.
- To loathe: This means that you really dislike something. Example: “I loathe the ways that kids are taught at school these days.” Remember, you don’t have to share your own experiences on the test if they are too distant. You can also share the experiences of people in your life. You can pivot and you can still get a high score!
