Video: Why is Reading Easier than Listening

Why is reading easier than listening for some students? And how can you strengthen your weaker IELTS skills?

reading easier than listening

We all have our strengths and weaknesses.

Recently, a student in our Facebook Live IELTS Q and A session(every Thursday at 12pm PST) asked why his reading seemed to be so much better than listening.

Even if this exact situation isn’t true for you, you undoubtedly have some skills that seem to be better than others!

Having skills be ‘easier’ means that they are more comfortable to practice.

So, this student may have been reading a lot more than he was listening.

If listening seems too difficult, like you start listening to a native speaker podcast and you can’t understand much, you may just stop trying.

However, if you stop trying, you’ll never get better!

So, you must try and break free of your comfort zone, and focus on the hard things that are always uncomfortable at first. Try to replace the easy skill with the difficult one.

For instance, instead of reading a newspaper article, listen to a podcast!

The key is to push yourself, no matter which direction seems most challenging.

For new podcast recommendations, I have some!

The Nod is an amazing program about African American culture in the U.S.

Also, Stuff You Missed in History Class is an incredible show, diving deeply into historical events to bring up surprising and interesting insights.

So, push yourself and schedule extra time to work on your weaknesses this week!
