When’s the last time you visited a doctor?

Questions about medical visits come up often on IELTS Speaking.

You may also need to write about medical care on the writing exam.

IELTS Speaking questions about doctor visits

You are likely to be asked about health and well-being.

Possible Part 1 questions:

“How often do you visit the doctor?”

“Do you prefer to see a general practitioner or a specialist?”

“Do you have any particular preferences when choosing a doctor?”

These are a few of the many possible questions you could be asked on Part 1.

How to use this vocabulary on IELTS

Today you’ll learn vocabulary based on the type of question you could be asked.

All of these words and phrases could be used on both Speaking and Writing.

#1: Frequency of doctor visits

The examiner might ask how often you see a doctor.

They could also ask whether you see a doctor more for routine check-ups or for specific illnesses. 

  • Check-up: a routine medical visit to check general health

You need to learn how to say the most common reasons to visit a doctor.

  • arthritis

  • chronic pain

#2: Type of doctor

You could be asked if you prefer general practitioners or specialists.

The Examiner could also ask if you have a preferred doctor. 

You should now the names of specific doctors and what they specialize in.

  • cardiologist: heart
  • podiatrist: feet
  • pediatrician: children

#3: Preferences in choosing a doctor

The Examiner might ask what factors influence your choice of doctor.

Your answer might include their expertise and qualifications, communication skills, or location. 

  • Bedside manner: how well a doctor interacts with patients

You could also be asked if you are willing to travel to see a doctor or prefer one close to your home.

#4: General health habits

You might be asked about your overall approach to health.

This could include any preventative measures you take or any unhealthy habits you’re trying to overcome.

The Examiner might ask about your views on traditional medicine.

  • traditional medicine: medical knowledge passed down through generations within specific cultures

You may be asked about herbal and naturopathic remedies.

#6: Comparing the past to now

A common type of question on IELTS asks you to compare the past to now.

This helps the Examiner see how well you can use past tense verbs.

You might be asked about changing health practices in your country or culture.  

Be ready to compare medical practices in the past to current techniques.
