You’ve probably heard people say the phrase “When in Rome”.

What does this one phrase mean and how does it apply?

It basically means that when you are somewhere or with people who are doing something differently than what you are used to, you adapt to the situation and try it.

It means that you try something new or adapt to a new situation.

Another way of saying it might be “I wouldn’t normally do this, but in these circumstances I might as well give it a try.”

The full phrase is actually “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

Most people typically just say when in Rome with that intonation.

How Do You Use This Phrase?

It seems simple enough and yet it has many different applications or ways of using it.

You’ve probably heard it before, and now you will understand exactly how to use it.

What are some examples of this?

  • If you are in Philadelphia, you have to try a cheese steak because this is a very famous local food.
  • If you are in Maryland, you have to try the crab because that is what they are known for.
  • If you are in New Orleans, you have to try spicy Cajun food because that’s their specialty.

It doesn’t just apply to food and eating in a local culture though.

In India, you may be told to stop on the side of the road and feed the monkeys .

This may sound unusual or odd to you, but you just say when in Rome, and you try it.

Try new things especially when you are traveling abroad, but also in everyday life.

You don’t want to just be stuck in your ways because you might miss out on some cool experiences.

Have an open mind for new sights, sounds, tastes, and get outside of your comfort zone a bit.
