3 steps that will make you confident through grammar:

  • Step 1: Go backwards. Go back to the basic tenses like present simple and past simple and make sure that you are using them 100% correctly. It doesn’t matter if you are an advanced English speaker. It doesn’t make sense to move to the present perfect if you haven’t mastered the simple past and present simple. It might feel exciting to learn the higher level tenses but you need to master the basic ones first.

 

  • Step 2: Practice. Practice the tenses you have isolated. You can practice them by yourself by deciding that you aren’t going to worry about the higher level tenses for now. If you work with a teacher you need to make it clear to the teacher that you want to master a specific tense. You can ask for corrections only around that tense.

 

  • Step 3: Know the tense in your gut. Before you move on to the next tense you should be able to sense it in your gut that it’s correct. You won’t need to think about it anymore. You won’t need to stop and translate in your head. When you are speaking with 100% accuracy and you are confident then you’re ready to move on.
