Jessica Beck
"Director of IELTS Training"

Today you’ll meet Riyaz, a 3 Keys student.

He got an overall 8 on his most recent IELTS Exam.

Find out how personal feedback was the key to increasing his IELTS Writing and Speaking scores.

You’ll also get his advice for IELTS preparation.

This way, you can look honestly at your own preparation and increase your scores.

Riyaz’s IELTS journey

When he first took IELTS, he got quite high scores.

However, his speaking score was lower than he needed.

He knew he needed to put more work into this score.

Additionally, he wanted to raise his IELTS Writing score.

He decided to join 3 Keys IELTS.

This way, he could get the expert help he needed.

How did Riyaz prepare?

He decided to sign up for personal coach classes.

The feedback he received was that his Pronunciation score needed work!

He needed to improve his intonation.

Instead of a monotone, he needed to sound excited or happy if the answer required it.

He was given the advice by Jessica to do mimicking.

Shadowing / Mimicking

He chose YouTube videos with natives who use good intonation.

Then, he would listen to 10 seconds and stop the audio.

He would repeat back what the speaker had said.

He imitated their tone.

This helped him show emotion and appropriate tone when speaking.

It is a great strategy for practicing.

This way you can score 7+ for Pronunciation.

What Writing feedback surprised Riyaz?

He discovered that he wasn’t supporting his ideas well enough.

He got both email essay feedback and personal coach writing classes.

These helped him learn how to support his ideas strongly.

He also discovered how this affects his Task Response score.

He learned how to support ideas when topics have a plural.

  • reasons

Riyaz’s test day Writing Task 2 topic

On test day, he did get a writing question with plurals.

It asked for advantages and disadvantages.

In addition, as with all Task 2 essays, he had to share his opinion.

He used a very good strategy.

He listed two advantages and then shared an example that supported both of them.

This is very wise, as it’s difficult to fully support multiple advantages and disadvantages with details and examples.

How do unsupported details affect Task 2 Writing scores?

The score that is affected is Task Response.

In order to score 7+ every new idea must be well-supported.

Your score goes down if you have multiple ideas if any of them are not supported.

When possible, choose one idea and support it well.

If the topic has plurals, you will need two ideas.

Make sure each is supported with details and examples.

This is vital to score 7+ on Task Response.
