Today you’ll get vocabulary and ideas for IELTS questions about job training.
A subscriber to our YouTube channel asked a question about how to talk about job training, when he/she had no job training.
This question comes up in Speaking Part 1, either asking about training you had in the past, or what you might have to undergo in the future related to work.
Basically, ALL jobs have some sort of training!
Let’s take retail, for example. Retail jobs are those involving selling products in shops.
Even for that job, you’ll need to learn how to use the computer system, stock, describe inventory, and calculate sales/discounts/promotions.
Also, you could talk about ongoing training, such as with customer relations. That is a skill that takes practice– a lot of learning on the job!

Many employers require employees to watch a training video before they can begin to work. Usually these are old and boring, but they’re still common.
Almost any job will require you to learn information before you begin work.
This includes dress codes/uniforms, employer expectations and policies, language you should use, possible upsells– upsells are adding additional products or services to a transaction.
You’ll probably also receive information about benefits, like health insurance, or perks– a perk is something extra you get besides money, like free food.
Perhaps, as well, you’ll be told about scheduling procedures and options, how to request time off, and how vacation/sick days are accrued.
Think about a job you’ve had in the past, have now, or want to have in the future. Then, brainstorm what could be involved in the training for that position.
